Why mulch is good for your plants

Why should you mulch your plants?

Mulching your landscape beds annually provides many benefits that go well beyond aesthetics. Mulch provides protection, which acts as a barrier that helps with weed control, retaining moisture, soil nutrition, and overall beautification. Whether you use organic or inorganic mulch, it’s important to reapply it every year. We sell mulch delivered and installed in our store.

On average, mulch decomposes annually. The good news is that, as a rule of thumb, it usually only requires about half of the amount of the first installation when reapplying mulch. Many different types of mulch exist. Depending on your landscape layout and design, we can match a mulch color and consistency to complete your landscape. Benefits of Mulching:

Erosion control. It helps to control water runoff.
Minimizes compaction. Like lawns, plant materials need oxygen and water at the root level. This helps to make sure against soil compaction.
Moisture retention. It reduces evaporation, ensuring plants receive needed water.
More consistent soil temperature. This is especially important for winter freezes.
Weed control. Many believe this is the most significant benefit. A layer of mulch reduces weed growth.

Mulching allows fruits and vegetables to stay clean. Another nice plus to mulching is having clean feet when entering beds while moisture is present. Finally, a bed with fresh mulch is beautiful.

In most cases, mulch will last about one year until decay sets in, then more mulch can easily be added. The good news is only half the first mulch was used the second time. Mulch is essential to help support constant temperatures during the winter, keep water for plants, and to cut the weed population.
